Sovereignty of Indian tribes at stake
Governor Gray Davis of California has made a proposal to
tax the state's Indian tribes for 25% of the take from slot
machines, which is estimated to amount to a total of 1.5 billion
dollars.
The Indian tribes state this is in violation with the tribes'
sovereignty, as no state law is superior to the law of the
Native American tribes. In fact the constitution treats all
sovereign governments equally, including countries, states
*and* American Indian tribes.
Sean Walsh, a former spokesman to Gov. Pete Wilson, says
"The Indian tribes hold all the cards...(Davis)... is
asking the tribes to bail him out of a fiscal mess, and they
don't seem inclined to do so."
