Famous Binion's Horseshoe closed temporarily
On Friday evening the world famous Binion's Horseshoe Casino was
temporarily shut down by a group of US Marshals and IRS agents.
According to a deputy US Marshal, the agents were enforcing a federal
court order, to seize approximately $2 million, to cover for unpaid
union benefits since June 2003.
All games were stopped, and all gamblers were forced to cash in
their chips. The federal agents entered the cashier cage to seize
the money owed. Though the casino was closed, the Binion's hotel
is still open to visitors.
The Binion's Horseshoe is one of the oldest and most famous casinos
in downtown Las Vegas. It has been operating since 1952, and has
hosted the World Series of Poker since 1970.
The Binion's Horseshoe has some major financial problems. Besides
the unpaid union fees of $2 million, the IRS also filed two claims
last year for $7.5 million in unpaid taxes.
