Online Gambling Fight in the United States Heating Up
April 20, 2014
The battle to make online gambling legal in the United States continues
to hit speed bumps. The latest is a move by some in Congress to
put a federal ban on Internet gambling. A representative from Utah
is introducing a bill into the House while a senator from South
Carolina has a similar bill coming up in the Senate.
The bills would supposedly ban all forms of Internet gambling in
the United States. Not much has gotten done in Congress in recent
years and it may be that nothing gets done this time either but
billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson is throwing his money around
trying to ban online gambling. It is no coincidence that Adelson
owns some of the most profitable land-based casinos in the world.
If Congress does come together with a bill it might be a problem
for states like Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware who already have
legal online gambling. It would also set up a massive fight between
the states and the federal government.
Some in Congress would prefer that online gambling was legalized
and regulated in the United States but others would prefer it to
be banned altogether.
It will be interesting to see if Congress gets anything done in
regards to online gambling as rarely have the Democrats and Republicans
come up with any type of useful legislation in the past decade.
