Mexico Prepares to Regulate Online Gambling
January 5, 2015
Online gambling could be regulated in Mexico in 2015. The country
has an online gambling regulation bill in their legislature that
could pass soon. That would mean some changes for online gamblers,
especially poker players from the United States who have relocated
to Mexico.
The online gambling bill was passed by Mexico’s Chamber of
Deputies by a vote of 297-32 late in 2014. The bill now goes to
the Senate for approval. If the bill is approved then the online
gaming market in Mexico is expected to only have a few providers.
"With this law now all Mexicans can know how many casinos are
in Mexico, which permits have been granted, which are operational,
who the owners are and who the partners are." Deputy Jose Arturo
Salinas Garza, of the National Action Party (PAN), said. The bill
would also likely force all those poker players from the United
States who relocated to Mexico to play poker at global websites
to go elsewhere.
Mexico has not had any legalized online gambling and because of
a lack of regulation there have been many unregulated casinos and
underground gambling locations. The new bill would attempt to get
rid of the illegal operations and protect against money laundering.
Mexico will be an interesting online gaming market to watch in
2015 as they likely will implement online gambling regulations.
